Los Angeles, CA (July 9, 2014) – Music Director Gustavo Dudamel, in his fifth summer season at the Hollywood Bowl, conducts an all-Beethoven evening; leads a one-night-only double-bill of Italian opera, Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci; and brings together music from both sides of the hemisphere in his signature festival, Americas & Americans.
On July 22 & 24, Dudamel is joined by a trio of French musicians – Renaud Capuçon, violin; Gautier Capuçon, cello; and Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano – for “All-Star Beethoven,” opening with the composer’s Triple Concerto, and concluding with Symphony No. 5. These performances mark Gautier Capuçon’s debut at the Hollywood Bowl.
Gustavo continues to share his lifelong passion for opera with a special night of Italian masterpieces, Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, July 27. The Los Angeles Philharmonic is joined by the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, and a stellar cast that includes Michelle DeYoung, Julianna Di Giacomo, Christopher Maltman, Nancy Maultsby, Lucas Meachem, Tamara Mumford, Stuart Neill, and Christopher Tiesi.
Americas & Americans, a festival first presented during Dudamel’s inaugural 2009/10 season at Walt Disney Concert Hall and revived at the Bowl in 2012, exemplifies his vision of one American culture across continents.
In addition to the festival’s previously announced events with Gilbert Santa Rosa, Sheila E. and Gloria Estefan, Dudamel will conduct a pair of Philharmonic programs July 29 and 31. At the weekend concerts with Gloria Estefan, YOLA (Youth Orchestra LA) will perform “Rhythm is Gonna Get You” with Estefan and “Where the Boys Are” featuring Gloria’s daughter, Emily Estefan.
Latin-jazz and salsa singer Rubén Blades joins Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic on Tuesday, July 29, in a program that includes orchestral dances as well as selections from Blades’ landmark career.
Turning an eye towards cinematic music, the Americas & Americans festival concludes July 31 with Noche De Cine, celebrating film composers from North and South America, with a special guest performance by Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel, Amores perros, The Motorcycle Diaries) and a suite from Dudamel’s own score to Libertador. The program also includes a suite from McCreary’sBattlestar Galactica; Romer/Zeitlin’s “Once There Was a Hushpuppy” fromBeasts of the Southern Wild, a suite from Newman’s Angels in America, and music from Kauderer’s The Secret In Their Eyes.
