Elizabeth Espinosa is a presenter for CNN Latino, a new Spanish-language programming block created especially for the U.S. Hispanic market. She will now be in charge of Sin Límites, a show dealing with topics that affect communities in Los Angeles.
She will be joined by experts and newsmakers from the U.S. and Latin America, who will offer possible solutions and exchange viewpoints regarding the day’s news topics.
Elizabeth, who has a strong background in journalism as well as several awards, including two Emmys, has traveled the world to produce and present special reports. For instance, in El Salvador she discussed disabled and abandoned children; in Uganda, she interviewed minors that belonged to the Lord’s Resistance Army, and in Pakistan, she spoke with several women about arranged marriages.
Recently, Elizabeth chatted with ALEGRíA MAGAZINE about a wide range of subjects, ranging from the need to create special sports and recreation facilities for disabled people to her love of Saturday Night Live.
AM: How would you describe Sin Límites, how does it differ from other shows?
EE: We will offer the U.S. Hispanic population the opportunity to voice opinions, so that no individual feels he or she is not a part of the community. Everybody has a chance to speak, to give an opinion.
AM: What advice would you offer to Latino women hoping to start a career, much like your own, in television or other media outlets?
EE: Always be authentic. Always keep fighting, finding a way. Hilda L. Solís (as Secretary of Labor, she was the highest-ranking Hispanic person serving in the Obama administration, although she recently announced her resignation) is someone I admire. She’s from California and her father is Mexican. She once said that if you ask for something and they say no, you just need to keep looking for a way to get it. That is also what Sin Límites will do, find solutions. We’ll five the audience tools to fulfill The American Dream.
We, as Hispanic people, need to find ways to move forward. It can always be done, nothing in this life is impossible, and especially not for us since we have faith and are very hard-working. We need to keep fighting.
AM: Is there a specific moment from your travels that you have found to be particularly important?
EE: There have been several. In Uganda, we were in a village. I saw children, barefoot, carrying bottles of water, since drinking water is not easily obtained in that part of the world. In Pakistan, I realized the way of life and the way women are treated there is not like it is here or in Latin America; they don’t have what we do. We are very blessed.
AM: If the chance to move to another country should come up, where would you like to live?
EE: Good question; actually, there are many countries I’d like. I love Israel, and also El Salvador. Honestly, I’m happy wherever I’m given opportunities.
AM: You know five languages. How was it that you learned them?
EE: It’s my mom’s fault, because she loves languages and she passed this love on to me when I was a little girl. Also, I was fortunate enough to be able to travel. One of the languages I know is American Sign Language, because I have a disabled younger brother and wanted to communicate with him.
AM: What brings you joy?
EE: The main thing for me is to give disabled people a voice, to see them make progress, and I’m saying this because I have a disabled brother who can’t speak and I can see how challenging every day is for him. I try to give people in his same situation a platform, a voice.
AM: What can an individual do to help handicapped people?
EE: If he or she has enough money, giving to a non-profit. It would be wonderful to create a beautiful space for disabled people that don’t have anywhere to go. Large facilities with a pool, a gym, even a dance area.
AM: You were one of the 10 finalists in the Your Own Show contest on the Oprah Winfrey Network. What was it like to take part in this Oprah Winfrey project?
EE: It was wonderful. Oprah Winfrey is a lovely person. She shared information about something very important with us: how to help the audience. I am infinitely grateful to her and her team.
AM: Your Twitter profile says you’re a comedian at heart.
EE: Yes. I love Saturday Night Live. I believe life is not always easy, but laughter is the best medicine.
AM: Do you have any favorite star?
EE: Angelina Jolie, because in addition to being an outstanding actress she has been able to have a personal life and she has also adopted so many children. And I was a huge fan of Jenni Rivera. Living in Los Angeles, I felt I could relate to her and I would see her at certain special events. Not only was she an artist, but she was also down-to-earth. The more famous we are, the more humble we should be, is what I always say.
AM: Could you share any beauty secrets with us?
EE: My only secret is to laugh as often as possible. Life is short.
AM: Would you like to comment on anything else regarding Sin Límites, to be broadcast in Los Angeles on KBEH-DT CHANNEL 63?

AM: ¿Cómo describirías el programa Sin Límites, cómo se distingue de otros programas?
EE: Vamos a ofrecerle una voz al hispano que vive aquí para que ninguno sienta que no forma parte de la comunidad. Todos tienen la oportunidad de hablar, de dar una opinión.
AM: ¿Que recomendación le darías a mujeres latinas que quieran abrirse paso, como tú lo hiciste, en la televisión u otros medios de comunicación?
EE: Siempre ser autentica. Siempre seguir luchando, buscando la manera. Hilda L. Solís (quien como Secretaria de Trabajo fue la hispana de mayor rango dentro de la administración de Barack Obama, pese a que recientemente renunció al cargo) es una persona que admiro. Ella es de California y su padre es mexicano. Ella una vez dijo que si buscas algo y te dicen que no, debes seguir buscando la manera de lograrlo. Eso es lo que va a hacer Sin Límites, buscar soluciones. Vamos a darle al público herramientas para conseguir el Sueño Americano .
Como hispanos tenemos que encontrar maneras de seguir adelante. Siempre se puede; nada es imposible en la vida, sobre todo para nosotros por la fe que tenemos y el hecho de que somos muy trabajadores. Tenemos que seguir luchando.
AM: Cuéntanos, de tus viajes, ¿cuál es un momento que te haya marcado, que te haya parecido especialmente importante?
EE: Ha habido varios. Cuando estuve en Uganda, estábamos en un pueblito. Vi niños sin zapatos que cargaban botellas de agua, pues allá no se consigue el agua potable con facilidad. En Pakistán me di cuenta que la manera de vida de allá y el trato a la mujer no es como aquí o en Latinoamérica; no tienen lo que tenemos. Tenemos muchas bendiciones.
AM: Si te ofrecieran la posibilidad de mudarte a otro país, ¿a cuál te gustaría ir?
EE: Buena pregunta, en realidad hay muchos. Israel me fascina: El Salvador, también. En realidad, donde se me da una oportunidad estoy contenta.
AM: Conoces cinco idiomas. ¿Cómo fue que los aprendiste?
EE: Mi mami tiene la culpa, porque le encantan los idiomas y desde chiquita me transmitió esto. También tuve la bendición de poder viajar. Uno de los idiomas que conozco es el Lenguaje de Señas Americano, porque tengo un hermanito con discapacidad y me quería comunicar con él.
AM: ¿Qué te trae alegría?
EE: Lo principal para mí es que las personas discapacitadas tengan una voz, que salgan adelante, y lo dijo porque tengo un hermano discapacitado que no habla y veo a diario el reto que vive. A personas en su caso, trato de darles una plataforma, de darles una voz.
AM: ¿Qué puede hacer alguien para ayudar a quienes tienen alguna discapacidad?
EE: Si tiene suficiente dinero, apoyar con esto a una organización no lucrativa. Sería maravilloso poder crear un espacio bonito para personas con discapacidad que no tienen a dónde ir. Un espacio grande con piscina, gimnasio, incluso una discoteca.
AM: Fuiste una de las 10 finalistas en el concurso Your Own Show en el canal OWN. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia de participar en este proyecto de Oprah Winfrey?
EE: Fue una maravilla. Oprah Winfrey es una persona muy fina. Compartió con nosotros información de algo muy importante: cómo ayudar al público. Estoy agradecida infinitamente con ella y con su equipo.
AM: En tu perfil de Twitter dice ser comediante de corazón.
EE: Sí. Me encanta Saturday Night Live. Pienso que la vida no siempre es fácil, pero la risa es la mejor medicina.
AM: ¿Tienes alguna estrella favorita?
EE: Angelina Jolie, porque además de ser una actriz destacada ha podido tener vida personal y aparte ha adoptado tantos niños. Y fui gran admiradiora de Jenni Rivera. Yo, al vivir en Los Ángeles, me identificaba mucho con ella y nos encontrábamos en ciertos eventos especiales. No sólo era una artista, sino que era sencilla. Entre más fama tengamos, más humildes debemos ser, es lo que siempre he dicho.
AM: ¿Podrías compartir algún consejo de belleza?
EE: El único secreto es reír lo más posible. La vida es corta.
AM: ¿Tienes algún otro comentario sobre Sin Límites, que se transmitirá en Los Ángeles por KBEH-DT Canal 63?
