The great Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski will be part of FICCI 54 with the South American premiere of his film Ida, one of 2014’s most promising films.

The line-up of international guests for the 54th International Film Festival of Cartagena de Indias (FICCI) continues to grow. Director Pawel Pawlikowski, born in Poland and based in the United Kingdom, considered by the BBC to be one of “Great Britain’s most relevant filmmakers,” will be one of FICCI’s special guests this year. In addition, a complete retrospective of his work will be presented.

Expatriated from his native Warsaw at 14, Pawlikowski studied literature and philosophy in London and Oxford. In his thirties he made documentaries for BBC London, where he began to be recognized for his work through films such as From Moscow to Pietushki (1990) and Dostoevsky’s Travels (1991). He consolidated his career within the international film festival circuit obtaining several awards for his film Last Resort (2000) at the London Film Festival, the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Gijón International Film Festival and won a British Academy Award (BAFTA) for Best New Director.

He later confirmed his talent as one of today’s best directors with My Summer of Love (2004), starring Emily Blunt, winner of a Golden Globe and Natalie Press, the renown British actress. This movie also had a successful world tour, awarded at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and recognized with a BAFTA, this time for Best Movie, as well as having been a selected film in the Berlin, London, Rotterdam and Toronto film festivals, among others.

For his latest movie, Pawlikowski decided, for the first time, to return to his native country to rediscover the Catholic and Jewish confrontation that marked Poland during the Second World War. Ida (2013), which will be part of FICCI’s GEMAS section, is a black and white film that tells the story of young Anna who, before taking her vows at a convent, meets her aunt Wanda, her only living relative, through whom she uncovers cruelly portrayed dark family secrets.

Ida has triumphed in all the festivals where it´s been presented: the Telluride Film Festival, the London International Film Festival, the Gijón International Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and the Warsaw International Film Festival, to name a few. Its presentation at FICCI will mark the beginning of its tour through South America’s most prestigious film festivals.

All the movies mentioned above will be part of FICCI’s Retrospective, which will also include the full length fictional film The Woman In The Fifth (2011), documentaries Serbian Epics (1992) and Tripping With Zhirinovsky (1995) and the documentary short Twockers (1998).

This program is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Embassy of Poland in Colombia.
