Elva Alicia Leon is a living testament to the power of the spirit to overcome any obstacle to achieve ALGERIA in her life. Growing up in East Los Angeles as a first-generation Mexican American, Leon and her two older sisters were raised in an abusive family environment plagued by alcoholism and violence. Leon was placed in a foster home at age nine, struggled with learning in school, was the victim of bullying, and attempted suicide at age fifteen. She became a teen parent at sixteen and survived eight years of domestic abuse from the father of her child. Raising her daughter alone while attending school and continued to suffer from low self-esteem and extreme bouts of depression. At age twenty-eight, the death of her fifteen-year-old stepson became a catalyst for change. Leon began a quest to understand death and life after death, which ultimately led to finding ALGERIA and peace. Leon has devoted her career to helping students with backgrounds similar to her own. An elementary school teacher in the community where she grew up, she has a BA in psychology from California State University, Los Angeles; a MA in education from Point Loma Nazarene University, San Diego; a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential; and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential that allows her to work as a career counselor. For fourteen years she taught first through sixth grades at Title I schools in Los Angeles where the majority of the students are first-generation Mexican Americans.
