A Kike Calvo lo conocí una perfecta tarde de verano en la ciudad de la eterna primavera: Medellín. La pasarela de la diseñadora Española Agatha Ruiz de La Prada fue nuestro sitio de encuentro. Yo tenía algunos problemas técnicos con una cámara prestada de mi hermano que usaría por primera vez y nada más que – creo en la providencia divina, no me lo imaginaría nunca- Kike Calvo era el fotógrafo sentado al lado mío.

Si, el fotógrafo por excelencia de NAT GEO, The New York Times y decenas de publicaciones prestigiosas en el mundo. Si, creo que él me saludó a mi primero y con aquel signo de amabilidad me sentí con el derecho de preguntarle: Cómo puedo arreglar la velocidad de esta cámara para que me queden bien las fotos con esta luz?
Mi divina providencia no me falló. Kike me ajustó los settings y quedé lista para cumplir mi asignación del día. Luego, meses después durante mi entrevista, supe que Kike Calvo es Español, exactamente de Zaragoza y lo dijo con mucho orgullo: “ soy de donde nació el artista Goya, de donde se conocieron Penélope Cruz y Javier Bardem en Jamón Jamón, de donde son los chicos de Amaral y los Héroes del Silencio. Y la región se llama Aragón.”
También me contó que Colombia es uno de los lugares donde se siente como en casa luego de haber viajado por más de 85 países : “ Disfruto mucho de su clima y de la amabilidad de su gente, su amalgama social y de la salsa vieja, así es como edito mis fotos… oyendo salsa.”
Una hora no fue suficiente para indagar en el alma de Kike Calvo, quien me llevó por la historia de su vida a través de imágenes. Kike Calvo a los 17 años soñando trabajar en Wall Street. Snap Shot. La muerte de su padre que lo cambió todo. Snap shot. Su descubrimiento de la que le ayudó a superar la pérdida de su padre. Snap shot. Una nueva vida en Nueva York. Snap Shot. El ser humano que aún se sorprende frente al éxito.
Imagen sobre imagen, descubrí una vida extraordinaria y sin embargo muy humana, ya que para muchos el ser un fotógrafo de NAT GEO y conferencista de Leica Akademie viajando por el mundo puede sonar muy exótico y por curiosidad, le pregunté: qué es lo que la gente desconoce de tu profesión? Su respuesta dando pie a conocer más de cerca al hombre detrás de sus fotografías: “ Detrás de mis fotografías, está el ser humano que se enferma, el que tiene que lidiar con condiciones extremas en diferentes regiones, el que siente la presión de hablar en público, el que pasa horas sin dormir.”
El viaje artístico de Kike Calvo se fortalece paralelamente a su propia evolución, ya que para él entre más toma fotografías más conoce a la gente : “ la fotografía es mi manera de explorar y aprender sobre nuestro mundo.” Me da la posibilidad de conectar con la gente. Soy un contador de historias.”
Pero sin duda lo que más le trae satisfacción a Kike Calvo (kikecalvotraining.com) es compartir con los estudiantes de todos los rincones del mundo que toman sus seminarios de fotografía. Sobre estas clases magistrales, él dice: “ Lo mejor de todo es que terminamos todos aprendiendo sobre la fotografía, pero sobretodo sobre la vida.” El talento de la fotografía, Calvo no se lo atribuye a una acumulación de técnicas, ya que el mismo es autodidacta ( estudió periodismo y economía, no fotografía).
El arte de la fotografía para Calvo es algo como despertar los sentidos, el renacer a una nueva sensibilidad por la cual el arte nos hace mas cercanos a la humanidad y a nuestro planeta.

I met Kike Calvo on a perfect summer afternoon in the city of the eternal springtime: Medellín, Colombia. The runway show for the Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de La Prada was our meeting point. I was having some technical difficulties with a camera I had borrowed from my brother. I was using it for the first time and as luck would have it, Kike Calvo was seated right next to me!
Yes, the photographer for National Geographic, The New York Times and dozens of the most prestigious publications in the world was sitting right there. At first, he greeted me and I took this sign of kindness as a good excuse to ask him if he knew how I could adjust the shutter speed for this camera so that my pictures would come out fine with this type of lighting?
Divine providence did not fail me. Kike adjusted my settings, and I was ready to cover my day’s assignment. Months later, when I interviewed him, I discovered that Kike is from Spain, specifically from Zaragoza and he said it proudly: “ I am from the same place as the artist Goya was born, where Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem met during Jamón Jamón and where the group Amaral and Los Heroes del Silencio come from. The region is named Aragón.”
He also told me that Colombia was one of the countries where he feels more at home after traveling through more than 85 countries: “ I enjoy the climate there a lot and also the kindness of its people, its social amalgam and old salsa music. I edit my photographs while listening to those old songs.”
One hour was not enough to delve into the soul of Kike Calvo, who took me through the story of his life with very vivid images. Kike Calvo dreamed of working on Wall Street at 17. Snap Shot. His father’s death suddenly changed everything. Snap Shot. He discovered photography which then helped him get through such a loss. Snap Shot. He found a new life in New York. Snap Shot. Even today he is a human being that still gets surprised by his success.
Image after image revealed an extraordinary life, yet a very human existence. Being a National Geographer photographer and lecturer for Leica Akademie and thus traveling around the world may sound very exotic, so I asked him out of curiosity: What is that which most people don’t know about your profession? His answer let me know a Little more about the “ being” behind his photographs: “ Behind my photographs, you have a man who gets sick and has to bear extreme conditions in different regions, the one that feels pressured to speak in public, the one that sometimes has not slept for days.”
The artistic journey of Kike Calvo is strengthened by his own evolution. The more he photographs, the more he connects with people: “Photography is my way of exploring and learning about our world. I am a storyteller.”
But undoubtedly, what brings Kike Calvo (kikecalvotraining.com) his biggest satisfaction is to share with his students – from all over the world- who take his photography workshops. These master classes bring out the very best in him: “The best thing about them is that we learn about photography, but more so about life.” Kike does not attribute his talent to an accumulation of techniques, since he’s self-taught ( he studied journalism, not photography).
