Pablo Larraín’s NERUDA, Chile’s Official Oscar® entry for Best Foreign Language Film, was awarded four 2016 Fenix Awards, including Best Picture, Best Editing, Best Costumes and Best Art Design last night, December 7, in Mexico City. The Ibero-American Fenix Awards honor the best in film from Latin America, Spain and Portugal. The Orchard and Participant Media will open NERUDA on Friday, December 16 in New York and Los Angeles with a national roll out to follow.

Beloved poet Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco; NO) is also arguably the most famous communist in post-WWII Chile. When the political tides shift, he is forced underground, with a tenacious police inspector (Gael García Bernal; “Mozart in the Jungle,” THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES) hot on his trail. Meanwhile, in Europe, the legend of the poet hounded by the policeman grows, and artists led by Pablo Picasso clamor for Neruda’s freedom. Neruda, however, sees the struggle with his police inspector nemesis as an opportunity to reinvent himself. He cunningly plays with the inspector, leaving clues designed to make their game of cat and-mouse ever more perilous. In this story of a persecuted poet and his obsessive adversary, Neruda recognizes his own heroic possibilities: a chance to become a symbol for liberty, as well as a literary legend.
NERUDA premiered to critical acclaim in the Directors’ Fortnight program at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and also screened at the 2016 Telluride, Toronto and New York film festivals and AFI Fest 2016. The film was named one of the Top Five Foreign Language Films of 2016 by the National Board of Review and is a 2016 Broadcast Film Critics Association Critics’ Choice Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. El querido poeta Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco; NO) es probablemente uno de los comunistas más famosos en el Chile posterior a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Cuando la coyuntura política cambia, Neruda se ve obligado a esconderse de un tenaz inspector de policía (Gael García Bernal; “Mozart in the Jungle,” THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES) que le sigue la pista. Mientras tanto, en Europa crece la leyenda del poeta acechado por el policía, y un grupo de artistas encabezado por Pablo Picasso exige la libertad del escritor. El poeta, sin embargo, concibe la batalla contra su enemigo policial como una oportunidad para reinventarse. Por ello, juega astutamente con el inspector y deja pistas diseñadas para convertir este juego del gato y el ratón en una experiencia peligrosa. En esta historia donde el poeta es perseguido por un adversario obsesivo, Neruda reconoce sus propias posibilidades de alzarse como un héroe: una oportunidad para convertirse en un símbolo de la libertad y en una leyenda literaria.
NERUDA recibió excelentes críticas en su estreno en La Quincena de los Realizadores durante el Festival de Cine de Cannes 2016 y además se exhibió en 2016 en los festivales de cine de Telluride, Toronto, Nueva York y el AFI Fest. La película fue elegida por el Consejo Nacional de Crítica de Cine (NBR) como una de las Cinco Mejores Películas Extranjeras de 2016 y fue nominada como Mejor Película en Lengua Extranjera al premio dla Crítica Cinematográfica 2016 otorgado por la Asociación de Críticos de Retransmisiones Cinematográficas.
