English as a Second Language is a concept developed by East Los Angeles native, Guillermo Uribe, to describe the expression of our pocho/chicanoexistence through music and dance. Ironically for some of us, español has become our second language. There are so many variations of the pocho, with some speakers being more connected to their American side and others more to their Mexican side. And sometimes, both of these sides come out beautifully in a single song or dance.
About the Artists
Trio Ellas has been making waves with a unique sound that combines traditional mariachi, classic romantic boleros and a fresh contemporary twist, and the world has taken notice. The trio’s debut album “Con Ustedes” earned them a nomination for a 2012 Latin Grammy®. This event will also debut the release of their second album.
The Villalobos Brothers come from the other Eastside – NYC. Masterfully blending the indigenous rhythms and melodies of their native Veracruz, Mexico with the intricate harmonies of jazz and classical music, the Villalobos Brothers deliver an intoxicating brew of musical brilliance, cadence and virtuosity that awakens the senses as it redefines the notions of Latin music.
And The Blue Agave is the homegrown band that will open the night. The brain child of renowned studio guitarist Andy Abad, The Blue Agave delivers sexy, soulful atmospheric originals blending surf, spaghetti western and flamenco. Band members also include Trio Ellas’ very own Stephanie Amaro-Abad, Dante Pascuzzo, Pete Korpela and Craig MacIntyr.
The Open Floor Society will also present a dance performance.
